The Awl is one of the greatest things going on right now, in terms of providing writers of all levels an online platform that serves a smart, growing audience. And they posted something I wrote! So that’s a nice way to end the year. Be sure to check out Richard’s and Bakes’s, too, as well as the innumerable other excellent contributions to the End of the 00s series. (Note that the Awl is having some server problems, which they are working on.)

A pleasing turn of events
Thursday, December 31st, 2009“What Are Years?” by Marianne Moore
Thursday, December 31st, 2009What is our innocence,
what is our guilt? All are
naked, none is safe. And whence
is courage: the unanswered question,
the resolute doubt —
dumbly calling, deafly listening — that
in misfortune, even death,
encourages others
and in its defeat, stirs
the soul to be strong? He
sees deep and is glad, who
accedes to mortality
and in his imprisonment rises
upon himself as
the sea in a chasm, struggling to be
free and unable to be,
in its surrendering
finds its continuing.
So he who strongly feels,
behaves. The very bird,
grown taller as he sings, steels
his form straight up. Though he is captive,
his mighty singing
says, satisfaction is a lowly
thing, how pure a thing is joy.
This is mortality,
this is eternity.
This is gonna blow your mind

My word is now law
Monday, December 21st, 2009This, in reference to this, is delightful and gratifying, in no small part because it led to this.
Update, 22 Dec, 12:05 a.m. (in Chris Farley voice): HOLY MOTHER OF GOD.

The most annoying kind of comment ever (Warning: Contains swearing)
Friday, December 18th, 2009This is a comment I just posted on io9 about other people’s comments, because sometimes I just GET SO IRRITATED:
Of all the varieties of irritating comment out there, the absolute most annoying has to be “Why can’t you just watch the movie for what it is??? Why can’t you just enjoy it? Why do you have to analyze it???”
